From the Preface:
Often, a good idea can entice one to begin a project without an appreciation of the enormity of the task at hand. We have spent a considerable portion of the last three years developing an editing this book. At the outset, we envisioned a definitive compilation of the most appropriate methods for research with soilborne fungi. As the book developed, it soon became apparent that for this book is but a waystation, collection the best available information in one place, and serving as the point of departure for the cooperation and patience. We also thank each other for the mutually reinforcing enthusiasm which kept up the momentum through the inevitable revisions and delays involved in compiling a book with so many contributors. The task is complete, and we look to the readers to determine if the time was well spent.
