Alimurgia is a voluminous and revered document of agronomic erudition. The first four chapters of Volume I all document Targioni Tozzetti’s familiarity with the varied problems of practical and theoretical agriculture. The fifth chapter, which is reproduced in this book, addresses the study of the maladies of plants, especially those that are cultivated and have agronomic importance. As such, this chapter constitutes the first treatise on plant pathology in the modern sense, and Targioni Tozzetti deserves to be considered the first phytopathologist.
