Quoting de Bary: “It was not my purpose to present a monograph dealing with all the Brand fungi. For the present state of our science it seemed more important to me first of all to study the laws of development in a series of types; indeed this seemed to me a necessary preliminary condition for the investigation of the details. If and when I shall be able to settle many points about Brand and rust diseases by means of experiments with growing plants I cannot say. However, it seemed to me less expedient to wait patiently to see, than by offering a series of observations to give suggestions to those who may have the required terrain at their disposal.”
