Gail L. Schumann received her B.S. degree in botany from the University of Michigan and her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in plant pathology from Cornell University. She is professor emerita from the University of Massachusetts–Amherst, where she taught several plant pathology courses and had research and extension responsibilities in turfgrass pathology. Dr. Schumann is co-author of Essential Plant Pathology, more than 50 peer reviewed publications on teaching and turfgrass pathology, and numerous extension publications. She is a recipient of The American Phytopathological Society (APS) Excellence in Teaching Award, the Northeastern Regional USDA/NASULGC Teaching Award, the Award of Merit from the Northeastern Division of APS, and a Fellow of APS. She is
currently an adjunct professor at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Cleora J. D'Arcy received her A.B. degree in biology from Harvard University and her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in plant pathology from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. She is professor emerita in the Department of Crop Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, where she taught courses on plant pathology, professionalism and ethics, and teaching methods for undergraduates, graduate students, and new faculty. Dr. D’Arcy has authored more than 75 peer-reviewed publications on plant virology and teaching and is co-author of Essential Plant Pathology and co-editor of Barley Yellow Dwarf: 40 Years of Progress. She is a past president of The American Phytopathological Society, a University of Illinois Distinguished Teacher Scholar, a recipient of the National USDA/NASULGC Food and Agricultural Sciences Excellence in Teaching Award, and a Fellow of The American Phytopathological Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Plant diseases have changed human history and culture, yet few people know much about plants or the pathogens that cause plant diseases. Most of the people who will read this book enjoy the luxuries of abundant food and relatively low food prices. However, for many people around the world, getting enough to eat is a daily challenge. Sadly, famines still occur.
We invite you to read stories of plant disease epidemics that illustrate the past and present vulnerability of some important plants that people use for food, for fibers and oils, and for green spaces. As you read, we hope you will then consider how to preserve precious plant gene pools and how to stay one step ahead of the numerous pathogens that can destroy plants.
A variety of scientific fields are touched on in this book. A plant disease can be understood only by studying the biology of both the vulnerable plant and the pathogens that threaten it. Thus, the science of plant pathology introduces the reader to botany and to the various sciences associated with the pathogens: bacteriology, mycology, nematology, and virology. Beginning with the study of the nature of disease, plant pathology now includes studies of epidemics and the ecology of agriculture. Genetic studies have led to the development of disease-resistant crops, as well as the ability to manipulate plant and pathogen genes through genetic engineering. Biological concepts from these scientific fields are introduced along the way, and more technical information is found in the Science Sidebars in various chapters.
Plant pathology is a science with important ties to human welfare. All citizens should be aware of the biological basis of legislation governing environmental protection, pesticide use, release of genetically engineered organisms, land preservation for agricultural use, and genetic reserves. How do we balance safety and the cost of producing food, fiber, and fuel? How do we foster plant health in a world dominated by people?
These are two of the many questions we ask you to consider in Hungry Planet. We wrote this book to update Plant Diseases: Their Biology and Social Impact, published in 1991. Both books reflect our experiences as instructors of general education courses designed to enhance the scientific and agricultural literacy of university students.
