The study of plant bacteriology has led to countless novel findings and advances benefitting medicine and biotechnology as well as horticulture and agriculture. Our understanding of plant bacteriology has reached a point where it is fitting to integrate its concepts and ideas into an essential reference and textbook. Plant Bacteriology provides fundamental knowledge every plant scientist and student of plant pathology should know, including important historical events that gave birth to the field as well as its recent advances. This textbook will serve as a comprehensive resource for graduate students, professors, epidemiologists, diagnosticians and extension specialists.
The author, renowned educator and bacteriologist Clarence Kado, has organized the book to help the reader understand the emergence of this science. He includes a brief historical account of microbiology that led to the field of plant bacteriology and weaves in discussions of how bacterial pathogens evolved, and how these pathogens are currently classified. This sets a firm base of understanding for the core chapters that follow. The book clearly illustrates the symptoms caused by bacteria in a way that facilitates comprehension of the many different types of plant diseases that they cause. Each symptom type is presented with a detailed example of a causal agent and its characteristics, diagnostics, and mechanisms of virulence and pathogenicity.
Kado also includes an extended discussion on the molecular mechanisms of virulence and a chapter on epidemiology and disease control, giving the reader a current-day understanding of these important concepts. His vision for the future of plant bacteriology and the developments to expect soon will be of interest to all who read this much-anticipated book.
Plant Diseases Caused by Bacteria CD-ROM
Plant Diseases Caused by Bacteria: An Image Database and Educational Resource CD-ROM is the most comprehensive assembly of bacterial disease photographs presenting different stages of disease development. The image database contains 1,006 high quality digital photographs of plants affected with bacterial diseases. The images may be browsed or searched by host common or scientific name, disease name, pathogen, pathogen synonym, general symptom, or keyword. The CD-ROM includes detailed pictures with a range of symptom types caused by bacterial diseases. For example, blights, rots, scabs, galls, leaf and stem spots are all covered.
In addition, this CD-ROM contains illustrated and detailed narratives on 34 major bacterial diseases and includes important information on various factors of the diseases: mode of transmission, host range, mechanisms of infection, survival, and management. Among the selection of models are some of the world’s most serious diseases. This resource will be valuable in the classroom for teaching identification and diagnosis of disease symptoms caused by bacteria or as a general education tool for master gardener and extension programs. Images can be exported into unique collections for specific uses, which allows for use in custom PowerPoint™ presentations and teaching handouts. A preface, glossary, and references are included.

“This book is a very enjoyable reading covering many important aspects of Plant bacteriology. It is a great resource for plant pathology students looking for knowledge on bacteria and I usually use it in my courses. ”
—Leonardo De La Fuente, APS PRESS Senior Editor and Auburn University Professor
"...an excellent introduction to plant bacteriology...a desirable addition to any academic or research library which deals with plant pathology. The book's clear and concise writing style will ensure that it will serve as a useful reference for years to come."
—Journal of Agriculture and Food Information
"Full-colored photographs illustrate this studious, meticulously researched and detailed text...a powerful introduction covering the basics for any college-level collection strong in botanical studies."
—The Midwest Book Review
“…the author has achieved in an excellent manner…everybody who will read this book will obtain a tremendous load of information concerning the field of plant diseases caused by bacteria, mycoplasma, and phytoplasma-like organisms. The author and the APS Press merit warm congratulations and thanks for providing this excellent book to the community of plant pathology scientists. I strongly recommend this excellent book to all life sciences and agricultural libraries as it will stimulate research in plant pathology and plant breeding communities of researchers.”

"I am always looking for ways to improve the delivery of the material in my Phytobacteriology course in the Department of Plant Pathology at Washington State University. I was very excited for the opportunity to add Plant Bacteriology by Dr. Clarence Kado to the reading list. The text book is written in a straightforward manner which is easy to read and understand, even for the novice phytobacteriologist. The material presented was up to date and timely. The figures, tables and pictures very effectively helped to further explain or illustrate ideas presented in the text. The textbook provided excellent photos of bacterially infected plants, which were diverse in nature and covered a wide range of plants impacted by various bacterial pathogens. I used these as examples throughout the course. The references were complete and enabled an easy way to chose current literature for a more detailed discussion. There are numerous ways that people will choose to teach phytobacteriology, two of these are by organism and by symptomology. This textbook provides excellent examples and descriptions which will complement both teaching directions."
—Brenda Schroeder, Assistant Professor—Phytobacteriologist, Washington State University
