From the Preface:

Between 1980 and 1990, enormous strides were made in the environmental technology available to growers of greenhouse crops, with matching increases in production potential. Little, if any, of this technology was aimed primarily at the reduction of loses from insects and diseases, but it is possible to manipulate a crop and its environment specifically for that purpose. Together with advances in biological control of disease, this greenhouse technology offers the grower opportunities to reduce the very costly input of pesticide applications and soil sterilization. At the same time, it can considerably reduce the escape of pesticides, fertilizers, and water into the environment outside the greenhouse and can ensure less pesticide residue on food and florist crops.
